I sold a company at the start of this year. Here are my 5 biggest learnings from that process:1) Whoever can be more uncomfortable wins in a negotiation.We wanted an out, which meant we were quicker to give up on our 'nice to have's' in the deal.2) Complexity kills deals.3) There will always be another business/deal.Knowing what we know now, I wouldn't have bought the same business. Take longer to buy and go in with strict criteria. Same applies to houses, cars, events etc. 4) Make your retention machine pop.We scaled the business to about 3x the initial value, primarily from ads. If we'd focused as much time and energy on retention as we did acquisition, that number would've been 6-10x.5) You have to create space to allow for something new. By selling this business I've 2.5x'd my current one in 6 months (which is solely focused on retention marketing). Crazy what a bit of space and focus can do.

    There's something to be said for spreading your surface area for luck. Having just moved to Sydney, I joined the Earlywork community and jumped on their intro call to hear what it's all about. Straight away I was put into a breakout session (1 on 1) with Afonso Firmo and within 5 minutes we'd agreed to a coffee to chat about his sustainability startup, NetNada, and what I came to Sydney for - to join a startup.I had 3 criteria in my search for a startup here: 1) Value-driven 2) Small team 3) FunWe decided to meet again and kicked it off with a swim in the ocean. It was at this meeting where I knew they ticked all the boxes and a 4th box I didn't know I had: Tackling a huge issue globally, one step at a time.It was clear NetNada was here to change the world for the better, by making it simple to measure & reduce carbon footprints, all while saving businesses $. So I couldn't feel more lucky to share that today is my first day as the Marketing & Growth Manager at NetNada!
